Twin telepathy… a joined mind… ESP… Remade started as an experiment to see how similar we as twins, think. Working individually to a minimal brief that we would set each other, we would each tackle the creative challenge not knowing what the other had created, then display the final results, side-by-side as a diptych. The results reminded us of film stills; the original movie and it’s shot-by-shot remake.
Project MZ2502 (2012)
“If I ask him to think of a number, will you be able to telepathically guess what it is?” We used to undertake these little ‘twin experiments’ for fun during our school years.
We were interested in creating a series of work based on the idea of twin experiments. As we researched this idea, we began to uncover some disturbing accounts from the Second World War; specifically the experiments performed by Dr Josef Mengele. Most of the accounts that we read were simply too horrific to portray in a sensitive and well-informed manner, so we decided to move the ideas from fact to fiction – to tap into the 19th-century blend of science and entertainment and shift it into the 20th-century aesthetic of B-movie sci-fi. This helped to remove the activities from the real world and let us explore them as another form of contemporary folklore.
